How to search for a lost dog with a drone
A drone sees a field in a couple of minutes that would take an hour on foot. It works best over open ground, at dawn or dusk, flying 20 to 25 m above the ground and with someone checking every possible animal it finds.

When a drone helps, and when it does not
| Terrain | Is a drone worth it? |
|---|---|
| Fields, scrub, farmland, dunes, beaches | Yes, this is where it shines. |
| Riverbanks, ditches, firebreaks, tracks | Yes, flying along them. |
| Open woodland, forest edges | Partly: with the camera at 45° you can see under the edge of the trees. |
| Closed forest canopy | Little: neither a normal nor a thermal camera sees through dense leaves. |
| Streets and gardens | Rarely, and the rules on flying over people and houses are strict. |
Before you take off
- Get the facts from the owner: the last place and time it was seen, recent photos, size, colour and whether it is afraid of noise.
- Check where you can fly: airports, protected areas and towns have their own rules. Drone laws by country.
- Ask the landowner if you need to take off or walk on private land.
- Count your batteries. One battery of a small drone covers roughly 15 to 20 hectares at 25 m.
Plan the search
Start at the last place the dog was seen and work outwards. Search along the lines a dog follows: paths, field edges, ditches and water. The app draws the pattern for you (parallel lines, expanding square, spiral, sector or along a path) and checks the terrain and the known power lines. Which search pattern to use.
Fly at 20 to 25 m
In our tests on a beach in Spain, at 50 m the AI did not find the dog; at 20 to 25 m it did. Higher up a dog becomes a handful of pixels. Why height matters so much.
Point the camera straight down or at 60° over open ground, and at 45° along tree lines. Record in the best quality your drone allows: every frame is analysed.
Choose the time
- Dawn and dusk: lost dogs move when it is quiet, and long shadows help to see them.
- Midday heat: dogs lie in the shade, under bushes and in ditches. Look at the edges of cover.
- Night: only with a thermal camera and where night flights are allowed.
Review what you recorded
The AI marks every possible animal with a close-up and its place on the map. Check them all: it also flags rocks, bags and shadows, and it can miss a dog that is half hidden. Go and look at anything that could be the dog. How the footage is analysed.
If you find the dog
- Keep the drone high and the dog in view. Do not fly down towards it: the noise can make it run.
- Guide the owner on the phone. They should approach calmly, crouch and let the dog come.
- If the dog moves away, follow it from a distance and keep telling the owner where it is going.
