Help find lost animals with your drone
Families with a lost dog post in local groups asking for "anyone with a drone". If you fly, you can be the one who answers.
Where the requests are
- Local lost-and-found pet groups on Facebook and Nextdoor, by town or county.
- Volunteer drone search groups. In the UK and the US there are well-established ones; in many countries there are none yet.
- Shelters and rescues near you. Tell them you are available.
What to ask the owner before flying
- Where and when the animal was last seen, as precisely as possible.
- Recent photos, its size and colour, and whether it is scared of people or of drones.
- Any sightings since then, with times.
- Who owns the land you would fly over.
When and how to fly
- Early morning and late evening are the best hours: lost dogs move when it is quiet.
- Start where it was last seen and widen the search. The app draws the pattern and checks the area for you.
- Fly at 20 to 25 m. Higher, a dog is too small to see in the video.
- Do not chase the animal with the drone. If you find it, tell the owner where it is and let them approach calmly.
A map of volunteer pilots
We are preparing a map so that owners can find a pilot near them. Until it is ready, the best place to offer help is your local lost-pet group.
