Lost dog in the countryside or the woods
Dogs lost on a walk or during a hunt often come back to the place where they lost their people, especially at dawn and dusk. Make sure something of yours is there when they do.

Go back to where it was lost
- Leave a jacket or a shirt you have worn, water and its bed or blanket at the exact spot, and the car if you can.
- Go back at first light and at dusk. Call, wait quietly and listen.
- If the dog wears a GPS or tracking collar, check its last positions before anything else.
Where it may have gone
- Along tracks, field edges and riverbeds: they are the easy way through.
- To water, in the heat.
- To farms, sheds and anywhere with people and food. Ask farmers, shepherds, hunters and forest rangers.
Where a drone helps
Over clearings, crops, scrub, riverbeds and firebreaks. Fly along the paths and the water with the camera at 45° to see under the edges of the trees. Under a dense canopy a drone sees little: there, people and other dogs do better. How to search with a drone.
If it is trapped or hurt
Dogs can get stuck in fences, ditches, wells or thick brambles and stay silent. A thermal camera at dawn helps to find a warm body in cover that a normal camera does not show.
