Drone practice exercises for beginners
Ten minutes of practice a week is enough to stop thinking about the sticks. These six drills go from the basics to what a pilot needs to search for a lost dog. Do them in an open field with nobody around, in little wind and in normal flight mode, not sport.
1. Hover and hold
Take off, climb to eye level and hold the drone still for a minute. Land. Now turn it to face you and do it again: left and right are reversed, and that is what catches people out when the drone comes back towards them.
2. The box
Fly a square of about 20 m at 5 m height, with the nose always pointing the same way. Then fly it again turning the nose at each corner, and then in the other direction. You learn to fly by the map as well as by the camera.
3. Figure of eight
Put two marks 20 m apart and fly a figure of eight around them, at the same height and speed. Combining turn and sideways stick smoothly is what makes video watchable and searching steady.
4. Orbit
Circle a tree or a post at the same distance, by hand, with the camera on it. Do it both ways. It is how you keep an animal in view while you guide its owner towards it.
5. Straight lines at a steady height
Fly parallel lines over a field at 25 m, about 30 m apart, by hand, and watch the map: the lines should not drift. Then plan the same field in Animal Drone Rescue AI and compare. Search patterns and line spacing.
6. Find the jacket
Ask someone to leave a jacket or a backpack, the size of a dog and a dull colour, somewhere in a field without telling you where. Fly the lines at 20 to 25 m, recording, and find it on the screen. Then go through the recording: you will see how small something the size of a dog is at each height. What height to fly.
If your dog will stay still on command, it is the best target there is: the AI of the app looks for animals, not jackets.
Before each session
- Charged batteries, propellers without nicks, and the home point confirmed before take-off.
- Return to Home height above the trees around.
- The official map checked: where you can fly.
